North Stars & Writing
Several years back I took a short course called “Write Right Now” — the premise was that the students in the group would get busy writing, right then! (Bet you couldn’t have guessed that.)
I will always be grateful for that time and those words I wrote then. They’re all saved in Evernote, tucked away for rainy days when I want to look back on my younger self’s thoughts, uncovered truths and creations. That course set me on a course. I believe that is what courses are supposed to do. We have courses of study that sometimes end at the end of the semester or when the class wraps up. But other courses we take throughout our life seem to continue on far after the course’s allotted time, with a teacher, professor, guide or instructor, has passed.
That particular writing course led me to write a whole heck of a lot. I built up a habit of writing up to 10,000 words a day for many days in a row. Like, many as in maybe a year or more? I can’t recall, but it was a lot of writing. A lot of typing. A lot of moving of my fingers across the keyboard. I remember the day I wore the “R” on the keyboard out — it was getting stuck and feeling sticky and frustrating the flow of my writing. One day it just stopped working all together.
I didn’t have a lot of cash at that time and didn’t want to go to the Apple store to get it fixed. But I had to. I had to keep writing. So I put the repair on a credit card. And kept writing.
I still write, here on Substack and in my e-newsletter to the B-Side Community. I’m in a year of architecting, so a lot of my writing is not published or shared, but here is something I definitely wanted to share with all of you…
When the idea for B-Side came about, I knew that it was going to take time. This is a quality-endeavor with intention, intuition and insight as my North Star.
But there was thing that was very clear from the beginning: B-Side is for the future and for the purpose-driven creators, often solo and independent, who navigate choices, lives, businesses and communities day in and day out.
We were all born to be creators. Given unique gifts, it's our life work to bring those to actualization, to reality, to life.
There are hidden gems, talents and strengths and visions granted to us. They are ours to tend to, to nurture, to cultivate and to grow. Elizabeth Gilbert, in her book Big Magic, iterates: Ideas are energies ready to be made manifest. They’ll either come into reality with you, or with someone else. But they won’t wait forever.
You can say YES to your ideas and let them overtake you, sometimes overwhelm you. You can say NO to your ideas and nothing happens. Or you can simply begin the dance of collaboration and pursuit to insure you make the most of the inspirations granted to you and live out your one and precious life full-on, leaving nothing on the table to regret.
I choose the latter.
And B-Side is for those choosing the latter as well. We know life is both long AND short. That it takes time to build beautiful, amazing, incredible things and that some of the most miraculous things simply occur in an INSTANT.
We choose a Memento Vivere approach. We Remember to Live. Not to delay living to some day in the future that is, or is not, guaranteed.
B-Side is for those choosing to go Beyond. To Believe. To Become. To Be. It’s for the ones looking to do their work for signifiant reasons that ripple out further than a bank account. It’s for the ones who know the inner work is the most crucial to outer success. It’s for the explorers and adventurers of tomorrow - the ones willing to go into the wilderness of “in-betweenness” and vow to stay true until we all get to the other side.
We know there’s not always a clear definition of what the “other side” is or will be, but we know the world is in a change, a shift, and that a humane humanity is radically needed.
We know that a commitment to becoming our highest self more often than not involves how we look outward: Serving our communities, our clients and our world.
We’re people who commit to living out loud, transparent and vulnerable. Courageous, not fearless. We know no one else can do our work for us, and we also know we’re better together. So we each commit to our own work while simultaneously collaborating, cooperating and building community.
B-Side is for the entrepreneurs going into the future. The ones who feel called to lead, to serve and to give. Leaders aren’t just the ones with followers. They’re the ones who go first. This isn’t a move for more capital. This is a move for more connection. More meaning. More truth. And yes, more impact.
Through coaching, development, technology, support, community, and conversation, B-Side and everyone in it is writing the future. And we’re sure: It's better, faster, brighter and stronger. Because we're going together.
